Is This A Joke?
2019

A participatory photo essay based on studies of vernacular typography in Texas and New York. Documenting irregular type forms and treatment, these images argue that non-traditional forms of typography produce more interesting places. This book exists as an ongoing research document, mimicking the structure of sketchbooks through materiality and presentation. The judgment that “incorrect” typography retains less appeal is questioned by positioning the images on high-quality photo paper housed in a repulsive cover. The essay concludes by provoking participation from the viewer through supplementing their own images of striking typography.
